Pulse Blogger: Preparing your child for school

So here we are again …parents are happy, teachers are ready, or at least we hope so!

Life indeed is fleeting! I mean wasn’t just yesterday we were celebrating the beginning of summer, to the average teacher, time to rest, refill and prepare for a new session. And of course, for the average parent, the beginning of an eight week old nightmare!

What do we do with our kids? I got a lot of that from parents over the holidays and although I didn’t say this, I must confess it crossed my mind …. The highlight here is YOUR kids … Kapish?

So here we are again …parents are happy, teachers are ready, or at least we hope so! New session, new activities, cognitive, affective and physical experiences, all aimed at developing the total child.

It will be great though, if we can do this differently and not assume the role of “refuse dumper” when it comes to preparing our children for the new school session.

To start with, I do understand that things are different from how it used to be. When we were kids, most of us had “stay at home” mums and there was usually at least one parent that we came in contact with everyday. I really feel for parents who both have to leave the house at 5:00a.m. and get in around 9:00p.m.

These weekend parents seem to have no choice but to leave their kids in the hands of others ( who often have no kids of their own ) to raise. Hmmmmmm ..my take on this is simple. DO NOT HAVE KIDS UNTIL YOU CAN ! If both of you desire to make progress in your career, must you have kids? Okay, the deed is done, but there is the option of boarding schools.

I think there should be some degree of structure put in place as the child develops and leaving them in the hands of a nanny, steward, driver or cook, will most likely not be as effective as in a good boarding Institution. And yes, before you ask, there are primary boarding institutions too (I am a proud student of one!). I understand that there are some major disadvantages there too but this is better than keeping them at home if you are not there.

Anyway, Boarding or Day, your kids are going back to school, are they prepared? Are YOU prepared?
