Huawei Mate 10 release date, news and rumors

Update: The Huawei Mate 10 launch is today, and we'll be reporting live from its unveiling in Munich, Germany to bring you all the latest the new phablet has to offer, right here.

The Huawei Mate 9 was one of the best large screen phones of 2016, offering great battery life, impressive power and a good snapper - and Huawei is set to follow it up with not only the Mate 10, but also the Huawei Mate 10 Pro at a launch event later today.

We've collected all the news and rumors about the handset, which you'll find below, to give you an idea of what to expect from today's event.

Will it be good enough to make it into our best phones in the world list? You'll have to wait for our full review to find out.

The Mate 10 will have to compete with the Samsung Galaxy Note 8, Galaxy S8 Plus, iPhone 8 Plus, Google Pixel 2 XL and many other big name handsets, so hopefully some of this comes true, to make it worth the wait.

Cut to the chase

  • What is it? The next large screen phone from Huawei
  • When is it out? Launch event October 16
  • What will it cost? Expect a flagship pricetag

Huawei Mate 10 release date and price

Key points:

  • Huawei Mate 10 launch set for October 16
  • You'll probably be able buy it soon after
  • Price wise, it's going to be expensive

The Huawei Mate 10 will launch on October 16 - that's today - with Huawei teasing a new phone for that date, before Huawei CEO Richard Yu revealed details about the firm's upcoming phablet in an interview with Bloomberg.

We will be reporting live from the Chinese firm's launch event today, which is taking place in Munich, Germany.

As for the price, Huawei's Mate 9 was quite a bit more expensive than the Mate 8, so we don't expect Huawei will put the price up much more for the Mate 10.

The Mate 9 launched at $599.99 (£579, AU$999), so we'd expect a similar price for the Mate 10 when the it launches later this year.

Huawei Mate 10 design and specs

  • A bezel-less, 6-inch, 2:1 display
  • A 2,160 x 1,080 resolution
  • A dual-lens front-facing camera with 3D face scanning skills

One thing we know for sure about the Huawei Mate 10 display is that it will have very slender bezels, after CEO Richard Yu said the phone will have a large screen to bezel ratio.

The latest leaked image somewhat backs that up, showing tiny bezels to either side of the screen, but still significant ones above and below it.

We've also seen a series of leaked renders, showing a big phone with a fingerprint scanner below the screen on the front, a glass back and a dual-lens rear camera jutting out.

The source of the images adds that the Mate 10 will have a 5.9-inch display and dimensions of 150.2 x 77.5 x 8.4mm, which would make it marginally smaller than the Huawei Mate 9.

UberGizmo has reported that Chinese sources claim the phone will come with the now commonly used bezel-free screen design, seen on competitors like the Galaxy S8 and LG G6 as well as the iPhone X.

Elsewhere, we've heard that it will be a 6-inch 2,160 x 1,080 display with a 2:1 aspect ratio. That would make it long and narrow, again like key rivals.

Yet another leak, this time seemingly from a promotional poster (above) mentions a 6.2-inch 2,160 x 1,080 screen, so there seems to be little agreement on the size beyond the fact that it will be big.

We've also seen a leaked image of the Huawei Mate 10 Pro, which you can see above. The standard Mate 10 may well look different but they'll probably be somewhat similar.

The Mate 10 Pro as shown here has a colored strip on the back, giving it a more distinctive look than many handsets. There's a fingerprint scanner below and the front has an edge-to-edge screen. You can also see that it seemingly comes in black, brown and blue.

Since then we've seen images apparently showing the Mate 10 Pro in the wild and it looks much the same, but the back appears to be glass, where in renders it looks more metallic.

Most recently another render of the Huawei Mate 10 Pro has emerged, this time showing it just in black and lining up with the other leaked images. With so many consistent leaks we can be fairly confident that this is what the 'Pro' version of the Mate 10 will look like.

Huawei Mate 10 facial recognition

  • AI could drive a facial recognition feature

The same source claims the Mate 10 may have an iris scanner, and will have 3D facial recognition skills, which will apparently make it better at augmenting reality.

This is looking very likely, as Huawei itself has now taken a stab at Apple in a Facebook post, saying "facial recognition isn't for everyone" and "Unlock the future with #TheRealAIPhone."

A leaked image of the Huawei Mate 10 Pro (above) also has 'AI' written on the screen, which could again be hinting at a facial recognition system. Though there are lots of other things AI could be used for too.

Huawei Mate 10 camera and battery

  • A 23MP and 20MP dual-lens camera
  • A 4,000mAh battery

That adds up with talk on an unconfirmed Weibo thread that hinted at a dual-camera system for the front of the Mate 10, but there's no confirmation on who posted the rumors, so it may turn out to all be false.

Yu has also said that Huawei will improve camera quality for the Mate 10, while also providing a longer lasting, and faster charging battery in the phone.

But Huawei is putting a lot of money into its dual-camera tech made in partnership with Leica, so it makes sense that the firm will look to upgrade the front camera.

Huawei may also bring its upgraded dual rear camera system from the Huawei P10 to the Mate 10. Or it may upgrade things even further, with one leak suggesting the Mate 10 will have a 23MP and 20MP pairing on the back.

As for the battery, the only rumor we've heard there puts it at 4,000mAh - the same size as the Huawei Mate 9.

Huawei Mate 10 OS and power

  • A Kirin 970 chipset
  • iPhone-beating power

It's now known that Huawei will debut it's long-awaited Kirin 970 chipset on the phone. Based on past form we'll likely also see this chipset on the Huawei P11.

Huawei CEO Richard Yu has revealed that the Mate 10 will be more powerful than the new iPhone - so expect it to be crammed full of grunt.

Huawei has also shown us a little hint of what the software will look like on the Mate 10, but we expect it to launch with a new version of Emotion UI that's based on Android 8 Oreo software.

The Huawei P10 launched with Emotion UI 5.1, so it may be Emotion UI 6 that we see on the new device.

The few screenshots that you can see in the video below are meant to show how the Mate 10 allows color to come through the text on the lock screen, which you can see most prominently on the clock in the bottom left.

Huawei has said these little nuances and more will be coming on the software included with the Mate 10.
