Ajimobi congratulated the two new judges and urged them to approach their duties with the fear of God, integrity and wisdom to justify government’s confidence in them.
Governor Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo State has commended the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen, for his efforts at sanitising the judiciary.
The governor gave the commendation on Thursday in Ibadan during the swearing-in of two new judges at the State Executive Council Chamber.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the new judges sworn-in are: Justice Khadijat Adeeyo and Justice Adebukola Lajide.
The new judges were presented with official Prado sport utility vehicle each immediately after the swearing-in ceremony
Ajimobi congratulated the two new judges and urged them to approach their duties with the fear of God, integrity and wisdom to justify government’s confidence in them.
He also urged the judges to discharge their administrative duties with diligence and professionalism, to build a worthy society where justice would reign.
“To this service, the twin essential qualities which the judge requires are impartiality and integrity,’’ he said.
The governor urged the judiciary to see to the effective delivery of justice to redress the crisis of congested cases in courts and subversion of people’s rights.
He expressed the hope that the addition of the two new judges to the bench would add to the value of justice delivery in the state.
Ajimobi lauded the state’s judges for living above board by eschewing corrupt practices that might attract sanctions and capable of bringing the state into disrepute.
The governor stated that his administration had appointed 13 new Judges since 2011 against the backdrop of his administration’s commitment to the maintenance of peace, tranquillity and egalitarianism.
“Every day our people cry for justice. They complain about the injustices in the land and their reasons are not far-fetched.
“Our courts are congested with cases while people’s rights are trampled upon by individuals and institutions thereby posing grave challenges to delivery of justice to all and sundry.
“If and when such inadequacies and injustices are allowed to fester unattended, the society unwittingly regresses to that Hobbesian state where life is nasty, brutish and short.’’
He stated that it was imperative for a responsible government to put in place a well-fortified judiciary, peopled by eminent legal minds with impeccable character.
Ajimobi also said that such a judiciary must be serviced by highly resourceful professionals well-versed in the practice and procedures of the law.
In his speech, the Chief of Judge of the state, Justice Munta Abimbola told journalists that there were 24 judges in the state out of the 30 statutorily required.
He said the development was due to paucity of fund.
“We thank God and hope that the addition of the two judges, administration of justice will be faster,’’ the chief judge said.
Mr Michael Adeyemo, the Speaker, Oyo State House of Assembly, Justice Adegboyega Akinteye, Justice Nurudeen Adekola (rtd), Oba Abiodun Kola-Daisi and host of other Justices attended the inauguration.
