The status quo of the white collar and finances have been a constant block to seeing a path dependent on creativity and remoteness but that has never been a binding limitation.
My mom once said “you are too young to work from home, you should be getting up in the morning and going to work and receiving a constant and stable income” now, that can also apply in a creative career blossoming to its fullest, but, her words do not have a double meaning, her feelings and intentions are loud and clear. She also says “how about your articles? You should get those online jobs and make money from writing”, that is her support. It is not much, but it is just what I need.
There has been a general misconception of how African parents view creative careers, and despite the success rates of African creatives who are breaking grounds, the misconceptions still hold water.
We often times see their half heartedness towards us embarking on creative paths as a barrier towards fully achieving, but humans are strategically programmed to hustle into their dreams and the half heartedness is all the kick start we need.
The saying “A success of something is highly determined by the force behind it” has been wrongly associated with having full support from our parents, but there is an absence of the understanding that the general ignorant comments from lack of understanding and the need to prove how right our creative thinking is, is also a needed force to achieve success.
Despite the general view of the difficulty in pursuing a creative career which often times do not have an industrialization factor, there are still victories and support, plus, humans are subjectable to change.
Restraining from pursuing that which makes us happy, especially if it is too contrast to understand and also does not entail a 9 to 5, a suit and tie and awful office gossip, it is just an excuse to lay on our backs and blame the wrong people for our underachievement.
Nothing and no one truly stops us from pursuing our dreams except ourselves and of course, money, but that does not qualify as a factor because it is controllable. We often times become barriers to our own achievements through mis-communications, it is a standing that not everyone will understand and it is our job to make sure that a slot for what we find passionate and also a space for continuity and expansion is created.
It is very possible to be whatever you want to be, no matter where you are born.
