Pope Francis: Here is what just happened between Pontiff and Yakubu Dogara

Yakubu Dogara says Pope Francis prays for peace in Nigeria

An interesting thing occurred when the Speaker met the Catholic leader at Saint Peters Square, Vatican City.

Yakubu Dogara had an unexpected experience when he met Pope Francis on November 23, 2017.

According to the Speaker of the House of Representatives, he was surprised to discover that the Catholic leader knows a lot about Nigeria, The Cable reports.

Dogara, who led a Nigerian delegation to the Vatican City, said, “The moment I was introduced to him as the speaker of the Nigerian Parliament, he said ‘how is Nigeria and how are you working for the peace of Nigeria? Pray for me also.”

He added that the pontiff is “well informed about the happenings in Nigeria.” The speaker added that Pope Francis added, “I pray for the peace of Nigeria and pray for me also.”

Dogara was accompanied by George Umo, Nigerian ambassador to Saint Peters Square for a mass held in honour of the 26 Nigerian girls who died in the Mediterranean sea.

Afterwards, the Speaker described the meeting, as “awesome”.

Pope meets with another Nigerian

This is not the first time the Catholic leader has met with a Nigerian. Last year, he also had a moment with the Emir of Kano, Mohammed Sanusi II.

The two met at the annual World Day of Prayer Assisi, in Italy, where the Pope also met with over 400 religious leaders.

There, he said, "Here, thirty years ago, Pope John Paul II said: ‘Peace is a workshop, open to all and not just to specialists, savants and strategists. Peace is a universal responsibility.’ Let us assume this responsibility, reaffirming today our ‘yes’ to being, together, builders of the peace that God wishes for us and for which humanity thirsts."

This happened in September, 2016.
